Spice of the South Coast:

A History of Indian Cuisine in Poole & Bournemouth

When you think of the "Great British Curry," your mind might jump to the streets of Brick Lane or Birmingham. However, here on the South Coast, the history of the Indian restaurant in Poole and Bournemouth is just as rich, flavorful, and deeply rooted in our maritime heritage.

For decades, the scent of cumin and coriander has drifted through our coastal air, evolving from exotic imports at the Quay to the beloved local institutions we know today.

From the East India Company to Poole Quay

The story of Indian food in Dorset begins not in a kitchen, but on the docks. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Poole Quay was a global trading hub. While many know of our links to the Newfoundland salt cod trade, the port also welcomed ships carrying luxury spices from the East.

Retired British officials—the "Nabobs"—frequently settled in the grand villas of Sandbanks and Canford Cliffs, bringing back a lifelong craving for the heat and complexity of Indian spices. Long before the first dedicated curry house in Poole opened, the town’s elite were already experimenting with "curries" made from early commercial spice powders.

A High Street Icon: The Legacy of 38 High Street

If there is one address that defines the evolution of Indian dining in Poole, it is 38 High Street. For over 40 years, this site has been a cornerstone of the community.

The Taj Mahal Era

For most of its life, this landmark was known as the Taj Mahal. As one of the original pioneers of the local curry scene, the Taj Mahal was the place where generations of Poole families had their first taste of a Chicken Tikka Masala or a fiery Madras. It wasn't just a restaurant; it was a local landmark where birthdays, anniversaries, and Friday nights were celebrated with traditional hospitality.

The Birth of Quay Spice

As the town of Poole evolved, so did its palate. The transition from the Taj Mahal to Quay Spice marked a new chapter for 38 High Street. While we honor the traditional roots established by our predecessors, Quay Spice was born from a desire to bring a more contemporary, vibrant "Spice Odyssey" to the Quay.

Today, we blend that decades-long heritage with modern techniques and fresher ingredients, ensuring that the legacy of great Indian food in the heart of Poole continues for the next generation.

The "Curry Boom" in Bournemouth and Poole

While Poole High Street was establishing its roots, the wider area was also becoming a hub for South Asian cuisine. In the 1960s and 70s, many Bangladeshi entrepreneurs—predominantly from the Sylhet region—settled in Bournemouth and Westbourne, opening some of the region's first authentic tandoori restaurants.

Today, the "curry mile" of the South Coast stretches from the bustling centers of Bournemouth to the trendy pockets of Ashley Cross and Parkstone, making our region one of the best places in the UK to experience authentic Indian flavors.
